The seeds of anti-Semitism are sown in the Passion narratives, especially in the Gospel of John, the reading for Good Friday where the word “Jews” is used 21 times, mostly in a negative manner. Celebrating the “Shipwreck of St. Paul in Malta”

Saint Paul in Malta …He ordered those who could swim to throw themselves overboard…and so it was that all escaped to land. After we had escaped, we then learned that the island was called Malta.  (Acts 27:43-28:1)

Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and put them on the fire, when a viper came out because of the heat and fastened on his hand… (Acts 28:3-6)

The Crowning with Thorns

Basilica Ecce Homo DomeEach year on the first Friday of Lent we, at Ecce Homo have the tradition of commemorating the Crowning with Thorns.  It is a very solemn and impressive ceremony. Usually the Latin Pariarch of Jerusalem, Fuad Twal presides at this ceremony.  However, this year it coincided with the installation of Archbishop Maroun Lahlam who was named by Pope Benedict XVI, as Auxiliary Bishop and Patriarchal Vicar of Amman. – Read the rest
